Electrical Fire in North Rensselaer and South Washington Counties

Did you know that nearly 51,000 fires yearly are electrical fires! And the most common cause of electrical fires is due to a faulty outlet. We here at SERVPRO of North Rensselaer/South Washington Counties have some helpful tips and tricks to help you prevent an electrical fire.
- Replace worn out sockets! As stated, before faulty or old outlets are the most common cause of electrical fires. So, the best thing for you to do is to replace and loose or old ones as soon as you notice them wearing.
- Reduce the risk of circuit overloads! You never want to overload your outlets or excessively use your extension cords. If you notice that you do not have enough outlets the best practice is to hire an electrician to install more. Another safety tip would be to avoid hiding cords under rugs this increases the amount of heat produced and can cause a fire!
- Install the proper light bulb! You want to make sure that you avoid installing a bulb with a high wattage to light fixture that is incapable of handling a high wattage.
- Use space heaters appropriately. Avoid flammable products/materials around this type of equipment such as paper, cardboards, coats, and rugs.
