It is reported that in the United States a home fire is put on record every 24 seconds. According to the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) the works out to nearly 8,600 fires a day. The leading cause of house fires are cooking-related, malfunctioning appliances, frayed wiring or cords, and open flame carelessness.
There are several things you can do to help prevent home fires. By being proactive you can help minimize the risks of a fire and keep your family and home safe.
- Maintain Smoke Detectors – the testing on a smoke detector should be done at least once a month, and should be replaced every 10 years.
- Maintain electrical cords – wires and cords should be checked frequently for frayed spots and should be immediately replaced if they are present. It is also not safe to run electrical cords under rugs or behind furniture, as they can produce heat and catch fire.
- Clean the Dryer- After drying each load of laundry clearing the lint from the tray can prevent build up which because a fire hazard when the dryer is warming up.
- Read Product Labels- There are many household products that are flammable including aerosol cans. These should be kept away from sunlight or heat sources.
- Keep an eye on open flames- It is never wise to leave the room when there is an open flame. Fires can start and spread faster than you think so whether it be cooking flame, candles, or even a fireplace always keep a close eye on them.
